The AHE follow in the footsteps of the true bluesman...

More than 80 years ago, legendary bluesman, Robert Johnson, traveled the Mississippi countryside.  He was talented, but young and amateur at best.  He had not drunk enough whiskey. He did not have the “licks.” He had not yet lived the blues. Robert Johnson played with any country farmer or ‘scallywag’ that could strum a lick on the guitar.

He soon became a legend, a virtuoso…one of the founding fathers of the Blues. How did he get so good? His sudden virtuosity and arsenal of guitar licks became clouded with mystery.  It was not possible. He must have sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads!

Robert was surely born to be a blues musician. It was his destiny. He had incredible natural talent and photographic musical memory. However, one of the keys to his success had very little to do with him. It had to do with us: the fellow blues musicians that have enthusiasm for music. The lot of us that stay up late at night and practice blues “licks” until our fingers hurt or until we can’t breathe another note on the harp.  Robert Johnson played with anyone that knew anything. He remembered and moved on. He became great not by himself, but with the help of the scattered blues musicians throughout the Mississippi countryside.

Following in the footsteps of the great blues legends, we too wish to share our skills. The harmonica is quite underrated, but perhaps the most important instrument in the blues. It can sound good with a few licks, huffs and blows, but it takes more than a lifetime to master. We harp enthusiasts choose to gather together to share our knowledge, our passion, and our expertise without pride or financial motive.  Our fellowship has but one common interest: to share our love for the blues harmonica.
